China A takes surprise lead

18th September, Yancheng: Doubles silver medallist, Wang Zhiyong and Qi Wankang teamed up with Xu Chen to take a surprise lead in the Men's Trios first block of the 28th East Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships ahead of fancied Korean trio.

The first Hong Kong trio of James Lui, Jimmy Cheung and Ernest Kwok started off superbly with a splendid 682 to lead the second Korean trio of Doubles gold medallist, Jo Young Bin and Han Jae Hyeon with Kim Jun Seong by 19 pins.

Wang, Qi and Xu was third with 655 and two other trios, Chinese Taipei 2 and DPR Korea 1 both scoring past the 600-mark for fourth and fifth spots. Hong Kong stumbled to a poor 507 in their secoond game to quickly slip out of contention as Korea surged ahead into the lead with 576.

The second China A trio of Cai Qilin, Chen Jiaming and Cai Yangxin added a superb 664 in the second game to move up to second ahead of their compatriots in third after they knocked down 552. But Wang, Qi and Xu fought back galantly with 697 to claim top spot with 1904.

Korea 2 settled for second position with 1861 despite ending with a respectable 622 in their third game. China A1 finished third with 1826 while the other Korean trio of Lee Won Seok, Lee Jung Soo and Oh Jin Won completed the top 5 with 1775.

The men will resume with their second block of 3 games tomorrow morning. The top 4 finishers will advance to the semi-finals following a short break. The women will complete their second block later today.
