Malaysian ends qualifying in pole position

11th September, Kuching: 2025 Thailand Open Men's Graded B champion, Mohd Amirul Syafiq Bin Mat Husin of Malaysia ended the second block qualifying round in pole position in both the Open and Classified Divisions of the Sarawak International Open Bowling Championships 2025.

2023 National Champion, Muhammad Syazirol rolled the tournament's fifth perfect game and ended his second block of qualifying with 1053 to lead Squad A and the overall standings with 2020. Nur Hazirah Binti Ramli was the best female by finishing second to Muhammad Syazirol with 2005.

2025 IBF World Cup Singles gold medalist, Natasha Roslan of National Podium Squad took up third with 1994. National bowler, Ahmad Azriq Izamuddin topped Squad B with 1946 but ended up overall in ninth position. Muhammad Zharaf Bin Shahidi of Sunway Megalanes and Musayyar Bib Khalid of Hero Bowling finished second and third to Ahmad Azriq but also ended up tenth and 11th.

But the second day of qualifying belong to Mohd Amirul Syafiq, who shot a stunning 1084 4-game series in Squad C to emerge as overall leader with 2075. Overnight leader, Megat Zaqrul Haiqal of Penang ended the second block second to Mohd Amirul with 2019.

Chinese Taipei's Cheng Shao-Hua occupied third in Squad C with 2000 and fifth overall. Hong Kong's Keith Mark, who topped Squad D in the first block was the cut in 60th position with 1794. National bowler, Nur Jeehan Iezzaty Binti Suffian miss the cut by two pins in 61st position.

With the special one-game Joker Squad 2 to be contested later, those in the top 60 hovering around 55th to 60th and those missing the cut and hovering around 61st to 70th positions could still have a chance to make the cut by replacing their lowest one-game score in the second block with the Joker squad.

Meanwhile, Mohd Amirul Syafiq also topped the Classified Division with 2075 followed by Cheng in second with 2000 and Marcos Chang Hao Hong of Malaysia in third with 1963. Overnight Classifies Division leader, Norman Fadhli of Sarawak suffered a poor second block and slipped down to 14th position.

The cut in 60th position went to Lucas Lim of Singapore with 1735 tying with his compatriot George Reyes III. If there are no improvements from other qualifiers after the Joker squad, the two Singapore will have a one-game tie-breaker to see who will make the cut.

Muhammad Syazirol topped the 3DU Division with his 2020 total. The Taiwanese, Cheng occupied second with 2000 and Megat Zaqrul Haiqal third with 1979. The cut in 60th position went to Alvin Voon Dong Cheng of Malaysia with 1751. Missing the cut by two pins was Muhammad Amin Syimir Bin Safri with 1749.

The top 60 for each of the three divisions will contest their respective Masters finals over 8 games. The top 3 in the Classified Division will be declared the winners. The top 3 in the 3DU Division will proceed to the Stepladder Shootout finals to determine the winners.

The top 4 in the Open Division Masters finals will proceed to the "Last Man Standing" Stepladder Shootout finals to determine the winners. The champion of the Open Division and the Classified Division will pocket the top prize of RM20,000 each while the champion of the 3DU Division will earn RM8,000.
