5th July, Hong Kong, China: Newly-crowned US Womens Open champion, New Hui Fen of Singapore and newly-crowned Youth Boys Open champion, Nasser Alkandar of Kuwait captured the Women's Open and Men's Open Masters titles at the concluding 48th Hong Kong International Open Bowling Championships.

New narrowly defeated her team-mate and second-seed, Colleen Pee, 255-246 in an all-Singapore title match to take victory. The champion started off well with a double but stumbled to a split in her third frame as Pee could only spared her first two frames.

Pee mounted her challenge with a double in the third and fourth frames to draw level. Pee took a slight lead after two more strikes in the sixth and seventh frames but New fought back to end with four consecutive strikes as Pee missed a crucial single pin in the eighth frame handing the match and the crown to New.

Pee had earlier trashed two Malaysians, third-seed Qurratu'Ain Izdhar and fourth-seed, Nur Syazwani Sahar, 270-244-224 to advance to the final. Nur Syazwani defeated fifth-seed and compatriot, Nur Hazirah Ramli and sixth-seed, Charmaine Chang, 243-215-229 in the first stepladder match.

Meanwhile, newly-crowned Youth Boys Open champion captured his first-ever major international title with victory in the Men's Open stepladder final match after defeating challenger, Lee Tak Man of Macau, China, 257-240. There was very little between the duo up to the fourth frame.

Lee took an 11-pin lead when he rolled three consecutive strikes but could not add any more as the 18-year-old Kuwaiti struck home from frame 7 to seal victory in just one match. Lee had dispatched second-seed, Jomond Chia of Singapore and local favourite, Ivan Tse of Hong Kong, China, 278-201-224 in the second match to face Nasser.

Lee edged newly-crowned Singapore Open champion, Rafiq Ismail of Malaysia, 60-38 after both tied 267 a piece in the first stepladder match as fourth-seed, Syazirol Shamsuddin of Malaysia shot 256. Nasser collected HK$60,000 (approx. US$7,600) as champion.

Lee and Chia earned HK$30,000 and HK$16,000 as first and second runners-up. Nasser had earlier topped the 8-games second stage finals with 2191 to claim top-seed for the stepladder finals. Chia finished second with 2108 and Tse third with 2096.
