Thai, Singaporean wins Grade A Masters titles

20th July, Bangkok: Tevakorn Ang-ngen of Thailand rolled a perfect game en-route to winning the Men's Grade A Masters title of the 49th MWA-Thailand International Open Bowling Championships while Karen Song of Singapore won the Women's Grade A crown.

Teh Lit Qing of Malaysia, who made the cut for the finals after winning a one-ball tie-breaker late last night, got off the block with a superb 265 to lead compatriot, Mohammad Amirul Syafiq Bin Mat Husin by 19 pins. Three finalists, Sushanor Sinanor Malaysia, Pawat Ungtrakul of Thailand and Tran Quoc Tuan of Vietnam tied third spot with 245 a piece.

Phanupong Permpimol of Thailand quickly took over the lead after following his opener of 238 with 246 in the second game. Teh managed 219 but slipped down to second while Sushanor stayed in third.

Phanupong continued to lead the pack with two sizzling games of 246 and 278 in the third and fourth games. Tevakorn rolled 289 in the third and a prefect game in the fourth to leapfrog into second spot, 16 pins behind his fellow-countrymen.

Tevakorn kept his relentless pace with 254 and 227 in his next two games to take over the lead. Phanupong slipped down to second but kept pace with the leader. The perfect gamer ended the finals with 258 and 232 to take victory with 1964.

Mohammad Shafizul Bin Suhaimi of Malaysia, stormed home to snatch second position with 1937 while Phanupong held on to third position with 1922. Li Yi Feng of Chinese Taipei and Sushanor rounded out the top five with 1868 and 1862 respectively.

Meanwhile, last year's champion and top qualifier, Sariya Chong varin of Thailand had a superb start with 248 to lead Karen Song of Singapore by 23 pins. A second Thai, Kanittha Pohl surged into the lead after adding 258 to her 209 opener.

Kanittha held the lead for another game before Song downed two strong games to take over the running. Whilst Song led for another game, Kanittha fought back to regain the lead after the sixth game. Song ended the stronger to take victory with 1688.

Fatin Azmira of Malaysia snatched second position with 1665 leaving Kanittha settling for third position with 1657. 2025 Macao-China Open Women's Open first runner-up, Thanchanok Vilailak of Thailand and Piretisha Ravichandran of Malaysia completed the top five.

Tevakorn picked up the top prize of 120,000 Thai baht (approx. US$4,700) as champion. Muhd Shafizul and Phanupong earned 60,000 baht and 30,000 baht as first and second runners-up. Karen Song win 50,000 baht as Women's champion while Fatin and Kanittha took home 25,000 and 12,000 baht respectively.

The Men's Grade B and Senior Masters finals will be contested at 5:00pm local time. The Open division qualifying rounds will commence tomorrow with the first block of three blocks of five games each.
