16th Cathay Bowl Super Classic 2004
Wendy Chai bags 2004 Super Classic title

2nd April, Singapore: ABF Tour Malaysia Champion, Wendy Chai won two matches in the stepladder finals to bag the 16th Cathay Bowl Super Classic title which concluded at Cathay BowlSAFRA Tampines this afternoon.

Fresh from capturing the inaugural ABF Tour Malaysia just five days ago in Kuala Lumpur, the 26 year-old Malaysian kept her form to defeat top-seed Roger Tuar of Singapore 213-180 for another title within a week. Wendy, who qualified for the stepladder finals in 5th spot, won her first match against 4th-seed Lim Zhong (197) of Singapore and round 1 leader Pasi Marjamaki (206) from Finland with a score of 211 to move up the ladder.

In the crucial second match, Wendy was equally impressive when she easily ousted second-seed Jeong Jin-Ho from Korea 207-163 and pocketted S$10,000 top prize. Roger Tuar settled for second with Jeong in third while Pasi Marjamaki and Lim Zhong finished 4th and 5th respectively.

The top 40 bowlers from Round 1 bowled six games in the quarter finals this morning. Valerie Teo from Singapore topped the score sheet with 1701 followed by Jennifer Tan in second with 1676. Early leader, Johhny Hong took third spot with 1669 with Korea's Jeong Jin-Ho just 11 pins away in fourth. The champion, Wendy Chai finished fifth with 1652 while ex-international Andrew Fang and Lim Zhong tied for 6th with 1643.

Roger Tuar (SIN-1642), ALice Tay (SIN-1641) and Sam Goh (SIN-1637) completed the top 10 from 8th to 10th places.

The field was cut to 20 bowlers moving into the semifinals where Roger Tuar qualified for the stepladder as top-seed with 1311 with Jeong Jin-Ho in second with 1276 and Pasi Marjamaki in third with 1230. Lim Zhong finished 4th with 1225 while the champion, Wendy Chai squeezed into the last slot in fifth with 1205.

Pasi Marjamaki continues to lead after second block

1st April, Singapore: Pasi Marjamaki from Finland continued to lead by a comfortable margin of 69 pins after Squad C & D have completed their second block of 10 games in the 16th Cathay Bowl Super Classic this evening.

Pasi Marjamaki took over the lead after he knocked down 2268 giving him a total 4191 when Squad A & B completed their second block of 10 games while Squad C & D have yet to bowl yesterday. Singapore's Faizal Chew who was 26th in the first block, was the biggest mover when he scored 2191 bring his total to 4122 and second overall. ABF Tour Malaysia champion, Wendy Chai was another bowler who improved in this block to move up from 28th to 3rd with a total of 4076.

First block leader and 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan knocked down 1957 in her second block for 4th spot with a total of 4059 while her teammate and ABF Tour Malaysia semifinalist, Alice Tay finished 5th just one pin from Jennifer on 4058.

2003 PBAP-Classic champion, Tang Joh Six from Malaysia did well to take up 6th position with 4054 while another Malaysian, Zulmazran Zulkifli and Singapore's Zhong tied at 7th with 4048. Terence Tan (SIN-4041) and Remy Ong (SIN-4011) finished 9th and 10th places respectively.

The top 40 finishers have made the cut for the semifinals on Friday. At the end of the semifinals, the top 20 will bowl another 6 games to determine the 5 bowlers advancing to the stepladder finals.

Pasi Marjamaki takes over lead by a comfortable marjin

31st March, Singapore: Pasi Marjamaki from Finland set the Cathay Bowl SAFRA Tampines lanes ablazed when he scored 2268 in his second block and a total of 4191 pinfalls to take over the lead by a comfortable margin in the 16th Cathay Bowl Super Classic this evening.

Marjamaki had nine 200-games and recorded lines of 252, 266, 206, 201, 237, 248, 227, 204, 247 and 180 for the highest 10-games total of the day on 2268. He led with a combined two-block score of 4191 and a comfortable 150-pin cushion over second-placed Terence Tan of Singapore who totalled 4041.

Another Singaporean, Rohezan took third spot with 3986 while ex-international and making a comeback into active bowling, Andrew Fang finished 4th on 3946. Squad A and B leader, Johnny Hong settled for 5th just 2 pins from Fang in 6th on 3944.

Doreen Pang (SIN-3921), Sandra Segaran (SIN-3910), Tom Hahl (SIN-3905), Jimmy Tan (SIN-3894) and Alan Tan Koon Chye (SIN-3878) completed the top 10 from 7th to 10th respectively.

Squad C and D has yet to complete their second block of 10 games. After the first block, 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan of Singapore was leading the field 2102 and needs to bowl 2089 or above in order to retain the lead. She was closely followed by 2003 Singapore Open champion Evelyn Chan, who scored 2042 in her first block of 10 games.

The top 40 finishers will make the cut for the semifinals on Friday. At the end of the semifinals, the top 20 will bowl another 6 games to determine the 5 bowlers advancing to the stepladder finals which will be graced by Guest of Honour, Miss Irene Ng, MP for Tampines GRC.

Jennifer Tan emerges the overall leader

30th March, Singapore: 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan emerged the overall leader after Squad C and D has completed their first block of 10 games in the 16th Cathay Bowl Super Classic at Cathay Bowl, SAFRA Tampines this evening.

Jennifer had lines of 223, 243, 194, 218, 191, 210, 179, 233, 139 and 202 for a total of 2102 despite a low game in the 9th. The 26 year-old, who had three titles to her credit in 2002 led a field of 84 bowlers and 52 pins ahead of yesterday's leader, Johnny Hong who knocked down 2050 for second position. Finishing strongly was last year's Singapore Open ladies champion, Evelyn Chan a further 8 pins away on 2042.

Singapore national bowler, Sandra Segaran, who was second second settled for 4th place with 2040 just two pins from Evelyn and tieing with Thomas Lim. ABF Tour semifinalst and 2001 Super Classic champion, Alice did well to keep in touch with the leaders in 6th on 2033.

only 22 pins seperating them. There are a total of 84 bowlers competing in the classic of which 10 were overseas competitor and 72 were locals. Out of the 82, 12 were female bowlers.

The bowlers will bowl the next 10 games in the second block on Wednesday (31st March) and the final 10 games on Thursday (1st April). The top 40 finishers will make the cut for the semifinals on Friday. At the end of the semifinals, the top 20 will bowl another 6 games to determine the 5 bowlers advancing to the stepladder finals.

It is a pioneer in promoting bowling as a healthy recreation and has a total of 140 lanes in Singapore and Malaysia. Johnny Hong leads after first block

29th March, Singapore: Newcomer, Johnny Hong of Singapore led after the first block of 10 games in the 16th Cathay Bowl Super Classic 2004 at Cathay Bowl SAFRA Tampines this evening from Sandra Segaran in second and Tom Hahl in third.

Hong knocked down lines of 225, 205, 216, 211, 204, 233, 193, 199, 150 and 214 for a total of 2050 and an average of 205 pinfalls. Singapore national bowler, Sandra Segaran took second spot just 10 pins away with 2040 while third place went to Finland's Tom Hahl with 2004.

Ex-international making a comeback to bowling, Andrew Fang did well to finished 4th with 1984 while the top female finisher, Doreen Pang of Singapore took 5th spot with 1953.

Alan Tan Koon Chye (SIN-1944), Jerome Tan (SIN-1934), Pasi Marjamaki (FIN-1923), Shahwall Mustafa (BRU-1922) and Izam (SIN-1913) completed the top 10 from 6th to 10th respectively.
