Evelyn Chan, Remy Ong scores double for Singapore

31st October, Tamuning: Evelyn Chan and Remy Ong gave Singapore a double win after capturing the Budweiser Women's and Men's Open Masters titles of the 3rd Guam International Open this afternoon.

Both the champions and top-seed survived first match losses to win their curcial sudden-death final match to capture the coveted titles.

The 28-year-old 2003 Singapore Open champion defeated challenger and first block leader, Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia, 259-200 in the second match when she strung together seven consecutive strikes from frame two onwards giving Shalin no chance to fight back.

Shalin started her challenge with four strikes-in-a-row to take a commanding lead and led all the way to win the first match, 240-171 but could not repeat her performance in the second to settle for runner-up.

In the earlier matches, second-seed Shalin out-classed local hopeful, Felymar Mandapat (183) and winner of the first match, Vanessa Fung (177) of Hong Kong with 236 before meeting the champion. Sixth-seed, Fung took the first match defeating two Singaporeans, Rena Teng (207) and Jennifer Tan (186) with 228.

Evelyn Chan completed the 8-games second block Masters finals to lead into the stepladder finals with 3713 taking over from overnight leader, Shalin Zulkifli in second with 3608 and Felymar Mandapat in third with 3432. Rena Teng (3428), Jennifer Tan (3210) and Vanessa Fung (3181) made the cut for the stepladder finals fron fourth to sixth positions respectively.


In the men's division, top-seed Remy Ong narrowly lost the first match to second-seed and challenger, John Bouwens, 226-236 but turned the table when he edged Bouwens, 194-183 in the decider to win his second international title this year. Ong won the prestigious 5th Qatar Open in early September to bag US$40,000 top prize.

In the first stepladder match, 6th-seed Alvin Kwang of Singapore ousted 4th-seed and Pepsi Youth Masters champion, Aaron Elliott (209) of Guam and Jay Leon Guerrero (195) of Guam with 241. But Alvin (167) and 3rd-seed Tyrone Ongpacu (181) of the Philippines lost to second-seed John Bouwens, who scored 192 to take the match. Bouwens gave the local crowd some hope when he defeated top-seed in the first match only to see his chances faded and unable to upset the champion.

Remy Ong had earlier topped the second block Masters finals with 3683, 72 pins ahead of John Bouwens in second with 3611 and Tyrone Ongpauco in third with 3567. Aaron Elliott (3552), Jay Leon Guerrero (3548) and Alvin Kwang (3491) sqeezed into the top 6 stepladder finals from fourth to sixth positions rexpectively.

Shalin, Elliott leads first block Masters

30th October, Tamuning: Asian Ranked No. 1, Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia and Pepsi Youth Masters champion, Aaron Elliott of Guam led the Budweiser Women's and Men's Open Masters first block of the 3rd Guam International Open at Central Lanes Bowling Centre.

Current Asian Ranked No. 1 and Malaysia's representative to this year's AMF Bowling World Cup for the seventh time, set a blistering pace to lead the field with a total score of 1836 over the first block Budweiser Women's Open Masters finals.

2003 Singapore Open Masters champion, Evelyn Chan of Singapore finished a strong second, just 8 pins behind the leader on 1828 with the best of the local women, Felymar Mandapat in third with 1737.

Another Singaporean, Rena Teng did well to take up fourth spot with 1723 followed by Hong Kong's Vanessa Fung in fifth with 1628. 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan rounded up the top 6 with 1571.

Meanwhile, Pepsi Youth Masters champion, Aaron Elliott continued his prowess on the lanes to lead the Budweiser Men's Open Masters first block by 12 pins with an impressive 1877 from fellow-countryman, John Bouwens, who amassed 1865.

Early pace-setter, Jay Leon Guerrero, who recorded the highest game during the finals with 290, settled for third with 1828 after struggling midway through the set. Philippines Open Masters champion, Tyrone Ongpauco of the Philippines, took fourth position with 1816 ahead of perfect game shooter, Remy Ong of Singapore in fifth spot with 1797.

Ricky Duenas (GUM-1745), Shaung Ng (SIN-1715), Art Gatmen (GUM-1710), Keith Guerrero (GUM-1691) and Alvin Kwang (SIN-1679) rounded off the top ten respectively.

Action continues tomorrow, Sunday 31st October with the second block of 8 games. The top 6 from each division will make the cut for the stepladder finals shoot out which will take place at 1.30pm local time.

Aaron Elliott wins Pepsi Youth Masters

29th October, Tamuning: Qualifying leader, Aaron Elliott of Guam won the Pepsi Youth Masters title of the 3rd Guam International Open defeating top-seed, Keith Guerrero in two matches during the stepladder finals this afternoon.

The second-seed and challenger forced Guerrero into the sudden-death decider after winning the first match, 211-169 comfortably. Both youths were evenly matched in the second game but an opening in the fifth frame by Guerrero gave the challenger the advantage with a double strike to eventually clinch the title with 205 to Guerrero's 182.

The champion had earlier defeated third-seed, Sheena Go of the Philippines and fourth-seed Victor San Nicolas in the second match 198-176-163 to meet the top-seed. San Nicolas ousted fifth-seed Felymar Mandapat and defending champion JD Castro in the first match 234-201-194.

With the win, Elliott earned a $500.00 check and the champion's trophy while Guerrero settled for second. The runner-up, who won the Classified Masters

yesterday, led the field with a 1697 total followed by Elliott in second with 1679 and Sheena Go in third with 1609. San Nicolas (1593), Mandapat (1582) and Castro (1576) made the stepladder finals in fourth to sixth positions respectively in the 8-game Youth Masters roll-off earlier.


Meanwhile, there were no changes in the leaderboard of the Budweiser Men and Women’s Open Masters qualifying with Remy Ong maintaining the lead with 987. Tyrone Ongpauco of the Philippines moved into second spot with 919 with top local bowler Ray Manibusan holding on to third place with 907.

Felymar Mandapat also maintained her lead the women's division with 861 followed by current Asian-ranked No. 1, Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia moving up to second with 852. A further 2 pins behind came Evelyn Chan of Singapore on 850 in third spot.

The Men and Women’s Open Masters finals will begin tomorrow (30th October) at 9.30am when the top 30 men and 12 women will compete for the coveted titles and cash prizes with the first block of 8 games. The second

block of another 8 games will be contested on Sunday, 31st October at the end of which the top 6 will make the cut for the stepladder finals to determine the champions.

Guerrero wins Classified Masters convincingly

28th October, Tamuning: Keith Guerrero of Guam outclassed a strong field to win the 3rd Guam International Open Classified Masters title convincingly to claim the first prize of US$500 at Central Lanes.

Guerrero led the field from the third game of the 8-game series rolling lines of 211, 279, 211, 237, 227, 191, 191 and 248 for a 1795 total and an average of 224.38 to move into the stepladder finals as top-seed.

The 14-year-old struck home from frame 5 on lanes 15 and 16 defeating challenger Art Gatmen, 242-176 in the final stepladder match to win the title.

Sixth-seed, Art Gatmen staved off a last game surge by J.D. Castro to make the round of six finalists. Gatmen staged a knock off round rally to face the top seed Guerrero by defeating fouth-seed, Ray Manibusan (176) and fifth-seed, Brian Manibusan (168) with 184 in the first match.

He then upstaged second-seed and qualifying round leader, Yap Kok Wee (220) along with third-seed and defending champion, Sheena Go (169) with 236 in the second match before loosing to the champion.

continued to lead the Budwieser Men's Open division qualifiers with 984 total followed by Guam's Ray Manibusan in second with 907. Philippines Open champion, Tyrone Ongpauco improved to take up third spot with 888 ahead of locals, Ricky Duenas and Virgil Toledo rounding up the top five with 881 and 876 respectively.

Felymar Mandapat of Guam maintained top spot in the Budweiser Women's Open division with a 861 total followed by Singapore's Evelyn Chan with 850 and Hong Kong's Vanessa Fung with 844 in second and third positions respetively. Singapore's Alice Tay and Guam's Shellee Javier took up fourth and fifth spots with 812 and 768.

Qualifying continues until Friday, 29th October while the Pepsi Youth Masters finals will be contested on Friday, 29th October at 1.30pm.

Remy Ong shoots first perfect game for the lead

26th October, Tamuning: Qatar Open champion, Remy Ong of Singapore shot the first perfect game of the 3rd Guam International Open to take over the lead of the Men's Open Masters qualifying table at Central Lanes.

The 26-year-old Proshop owner scorched the lanes with lines of 186, 269, 300 and 232 to take over the lead with a total of 984.

Remy, who won the 5th Qatar Open last month in Doha and winning the top prize of US$40,000, was among a strong Singapore contingent to arrive in Tamuning for the championship. Vietnam Open champion, Lee Yu Wen of Singapore, took second spot with 871 followed by Shaun Ng in third with 835.

Philippines Open champion, Tyrone Ongpauco of the Philippines finished fourth with 801 ahead of Singapore's Alvin Kwang in fifth with 757.

Local, Ray Manibusan continued to lead the local pool with 907 and second overall followed by Ricky Duenas with 881 while overnight leader, Virgil Toledo settled for third spot with 876.

Meanwhile, not many local women has taken to the lanes for the qualifying rounds except Felymar Mandapat, who took the lead with 861 with Shellee Javier in second with 766.

In the overseas pool, 2003 Singapore Open champion, Evelyn Chan topped the table with a score of 850 with lines of 212, 214, 186 and 238. Indonesia Open runner-up, Vanessa Fung of Hong Kong took second spot with 844 ahead of Singapore's Alice Tay in third with 779.

In the Graded Classic division, Yap Kok Wee grabbed the lead with 889 with Filipina, Sheena Go in second with 820 while Ray Manibusan dropped to third spot with 847.

In the Youth division, Aaron Elliott shot to the top of the table with a score of 955 with lines of 235, 211, 278 and 231. Elliott is 120 pins ahead of second-placed youth, Jonathan Duenas with 835 followed by women division leader, Felymar Mandapat in third with 828.

Qualifying continues through to the 29th October when the top 10 qualifiers from each of the local, overseas and mixed pool in the men division will make the Masters finals scheduled to be played on the 30th October while the top 8 from the local, overseas and mixed pool in the women division will also make the Masters finals.

Ray Manibusan claims pole position

24th October, Tamuning: Newcomer, Ray Manibusan shot 907 to claim pole position of the Men's Open Masters local pool qualifying table of the 3rd Guam International Open at Central Lanes early today.

Manibusan took pole and the lead when he had lines of 197, 190, 241 and 279 for a total of 907 and an average of 226.75.

Overnight leader, Virgil Toledo was pushed down one spot to second with 876, ahead of Buddy Saludo in third spot with 834. Just one pin away came early leader, Brian Manibusan tieing with Jonathan Duenas on 833 for fourth position.


Meanwhile, 2003 World Championship Bronze medalist, Duane "Big Daddy" Camacho, who was fourth a day ago, dropped off the local pool to take up top spot in the mixed pool with 763 after Jay Leon Guerrero (6th-816), Aaron Elliott (7th-786), Norison Catbagan (8th-773), Melvin Javier (9th-770) and Bill Parkinson (10th-765) all made the top 10 in the local pool.

Charlie Catbagan (2nd-732) Charlie Tenorio (3rd-729), Rick Mesa (4th-677) and John Bouwens (5th-667) completed the top 5 in the mixed pool behind Camacho.

There were not much changes in the youth division with Brian Manibusan still maintaining top spot with 825 with Victor San Nicolas snatching second with 801 and Keith Guerrero in third with 773.

Ray Manibusan, the leader in the Men's Open division, also took top spot in the Graded Classic Masters table with another superb 847 ahead of Frank Meno in second with 802 followed by Art Gatmen in third with 789.

Virgil Toledo takes over lead in local qualifying table

22nd October, Tamuning: Virgil Toledo of Guam took over lead of the Men's Open Masters qualifying table of the 3rd Guam International Open underway at Central Lanes before the arrivial of the overseas participants.

Toledo took over the lead when he knocked down lines of 213, 204, 233 and 226 for a total of 876 and averaging an impressive 219.00.

Early leader, Brian Manibusan dropped to second with 833, scored two days ago when he was one of the early local participants taking on to the lanes after a typhoon caused a delay in the start of the championshp. Jonathan Duenas tied for second with Manibusan on an identical 833 while 2003 World Championship Bronze medalist, Duane "Big Daddy" Camacho settled for fourth with 763.


No women made any attempts yet while the organizers await the arrivals of the overseas participants expected this weekend. 2003 World Championship Gold medalist, Cecilia Yap of the Philippines will also be arriving this weekend to defend the title she won for the last two consecutive years and will be hoping to win the title for the third time.

Meanwhile, current Asian Ranked No. 1, Shalin Zulkifli and Azidi Ameran of Malaysia have confirmed their participation and will leave for Tamuning on Monday. The 26-year-old four-time Malaysian National Champion has already won four international titles so far this year. She bagged the Malaysian Open Women's Masters title in March, followed with the 6th Sinai Open in Egypt and the ABF Tour Thailand leg in April. She went on to capture the Kingdom of Bahrain Women's Open Masters title in May.

Meanwhile, Brian Manibusan continued to top the Youth Masters qualifying table with 825 but had to share the lead with James Gumabon in the Graded Classic Masters table on 709. Virgil Toledo took third spot with 675 with Gary Parker in fourth with 650.

Local bowlers take early lead in qualifying

20th October, Tamuning: Local bowlers took an early lead in the Men's Open Masters qualifying table of the 3rd Guam International Open after a typhoon passing the city yesterday delayed the start of the championship.

Brian Manibusan of Guam was one the very few local bowlers taking onto the lanes after the storm to record lines of 214, 202, 200 and 217 for a moderate total of 833 and the early lead.

2003 World Championship Bronze medalist, Duane "Big Daddy" Camacho took second spot with 763 while Virgil Toledo finished third with 715. John Bouwens was one of the four who made their attempts to take up fourth position with 667.

Meanwhile, JD Castro, who scored a perfect game in last year during the qualifying rounds, will be defending his Youth Masters title which will be held next Friday, 29th October. The 20-year-old student from Chalan Pago took to the lanes to score 815 in his first Singles.

Brian Manibusan also topped the Youth with 709 while Maleeque Parker finished third spot with 626. The leader in the Graded Classic Masters qualifying table also went to Manibusan with a score of 825 ahead of Virgil Toledo in second with 675.
