12th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championship News
Versatility the key to success at Youth Bowling Championship

4th February, Hong Kong: Teams from 17 countries throughout the Asian region are travelling this week to the spectacular city of Hong Kong, China for the 12th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships. Hosted by the Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress, the week-long Championships will be staged at the 40 lane SCAA Bowling Centre, Caroline Hill, commencing on Sunday, 8 February.

Five medal events will be contested in both Boys and Girls divisions - Singles, Doubles, Team of Four, All Events and Masters, with a combination of short and long oil lane conditions for the Singles, Doubles, 4-person Teams and Masters events.

"The goal for this tournament is to challenge the versatility of the best Youth bowlers in Asia by having them bowl on two different patterns," explained ABF President, Vivien Fung. "Two pattern tournaments promote the ability to think, adjust and react to the conditions...the distances are varied enough to allow the players a chance to excel," she added.

"The WTBA Technical Committee has spent two years researching to come up with a level playing field for bowlers of different styles and the dual oiling pattern was to be implemented commencing last year in all official WTBA

and Zone championships," Ms Fung explained. "The Zones have been encouraged by WTBA to try different formats of play using the dual oiling pattern - the Asian Bowling Federation had in fact tried this in 2002 during the 17th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships in Hong Kong and the feedback was very positive," she said.

The bowling program will commence with the Official Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception on Sunday, 8 February, followed by Official Practice on Monday, 9 February. Six games of Singles in both Boy's and Girl's divisions will be bowled on long oil commencing at 9 am on Tuesday, 10 February, with another six games on short oil in both divisions on Wednesday, 11 February. Medal Presentations will be made on the lanes after the final round of the Singles at 5pm that day.

Doubles matches in both divisions will also be held over two days, starting at 9 am on Thursday, 12 February with the first block of three games in the Teams event commencing on the morning of Saturday, 14 February. The second block of the Teams event, plus the Medal Presentations for Teams and All Events will be held that day.

On Sunday, 15 February the top 16 bowlers, based on their qualifying 30 games, will contest the first eight games of the Masters Final in a one game round-robin format on a short oil pattern. The second block, on long oil, will be followed by a Stepladder Grand Final in which a roll-off between the top three players after 16 matches will determine the champion, second and third positions. The Grand Final will be played in match play style, with all pinfall and bonus points dropped. The player in the higher position will have the choice of starting lane and the right to choose the oiling pattern in the Masters Grand Final.

66 Boys, 42 Girls and 54 officials totalling 162 have been registered for this year's championship.
