Singaporean, Malaysian bags Senior and Men's B Masters titles

20th July, Bangkok: Singapore season campaigner, Andrew Lee bagged the Senior Masters title of the 49th MWA-Thailand International Open Bowling Championships while Mohd Amirul Syafiq Bin Mat Husin of Malaysia won the Men's Grade B Masters crown.

Singapore seniors dominated the start as Richard Ewe shot a stunning 266 in his opening game to lead compatriot, Ang Poh Huat by 8 pins. Ewe added 199, 205 and despite managing only 175 in the fourth game, continued to lead the field.

Pollakit Thanasang of Thailand trailed the Singaporean for two games before another Singapore season veteran, Jack Wong took over the running after the fifth game. Wong ended poorly with 194 in his final game to drop down the field.

Ewe looked set to take victory but a third Singaporean, Andrew Lee almost rolled a perfect game but ended with 299 to snatch the win with 1404. Ewe settled for second with 1403, just one pin adrift. Pollakit finished third with 1386. Chew and Wong completed the top five.

In the Men's Grade B division, Marcus Goh got off brilliantly with 269 to lead Wilaphut Andrew Wong by 23 pins followed by another Thai, Puntep Bhayakaporn in third, a further two pins away.

Vietnam's Vu Minh Hieu added sizzling 266 to his 223 opener to take over the lead. Wilaphut trailed in second by 13 pins as Goh shot a poot 157 to drop down the field. Vu led for another game with Wilaphut still trailing in second.

Mohd Amirul Syafiq, who had 228, 205 and 232 in his first three games, shot a big game of 276 to leapfrog into the lead with Vu dropping down to second, 42 pins adrift.

The Malaysian was on a roll, reeling in 264 and 267 to pull away from the field, 96 pins ahead of his nearest rival. Mohd Amirul ended the finals with 202 and 213 to seal victory with 1887. Vu settled for second with 1809.

Tsai Yu Chuo of Chinese Taipei stormed home to clinch third position with 1791 while Wilaphut and a second Thai, Puntep Bhayakaporn completed the top five with 1780 and 1764 respectively.

Andrew Lee picked up 80,000 Thai baht (approx. US$4,500) as the Senior Masters champion with 40,000 and 20,000 baht going to Richard Ewe and Pollakit Thanasang. Mohd Amirul also picked up 80,000 baht as Men's Grade B champion.
