Finland, Sweden seals victory in Trios finals

4th December, Hong Kong, China: Top-seed Finland defeated second-seed, Japan in the final to win their third gold medals of the HKGX 2025 IBF World Championships while fourth-seed, Sweden captured their first gold in the Men's Trios final over Denmark at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

Singles gold medalist, Essi Pakarinen with her Doubles gold medalist partner, Peppi Konsteri team up with Ani Juntunen lost the first match in a best-of-3 final, 162-179 to Japan's Kiri Watanabe, Shion Izumune and Yuri Sato. But the Finns found their rhythm to romp home a comfortable 241-171 victory in the second match to set up the third decider.

Despite having two open frames in the second and fifth frames, the Finnish trio struck twice in the sixth and seventh frames and another double in the ninth and tenth frames to end the match with a 190-158 win over Japan. The champion also ousted Denmark's Karen Kaegaard Nielsen, Mika Guldbaek and Megan Gales, 2-0 in the first semi-final.

Japan also breezed past third-seed of Nora Johansson, Anna Andersson and Hanna Engberg of Sweden, 2-0 in the second semi-finals match to advance to the finals. Japan settled for the silver while Denmark and Sweden took home a bronze medal each.

In the Men's Trios final, fourth-seed, James Blomgren, Joachim Karlsson Rosen and Pontus Andersson narrowly lost the first match against Denmark's Dan A. Ostergaard, Niclas Sorensen and Nicolas Carter by one pin, 214-215. But the Swedes bounced back brilliantly with a 254-210 win over the Danes.

In the third deciding match, the Swedish trio went on a strike fest, romping home an impressive 286-193 victory to claim their first gold medal of the championships. The champion had earlier knocked out top-seed, Ji Geun, Kim Jun Yung and Baek Seung Min, 2-0 in the first semi-finals to book their spot in the final.

Denmark had to work harder to beat third-seed, Julian Dinham, Luke Doyle and Blake Walsh of Australia, with a 238-218 win in the third match of the other semi-finals. The Aussies won the first match 213-212 but lost to Denmark, 174-194 in the second match.

His Excellency, Sheikh Talal Mohammad Al-Sabah, President of International Bowling Federation and Asian Bowling Federation, was on hand to present the medals to the winners. The Team of 5 semi-finals and final will be held at the same venue, Queen Elizabeth Stadium tomorrow, December 5.
