Vietnamese snatches Singles gold by one pin

28th July, Doha: Tan Dat Nguyen of Vietnam snatched the Boy's Singles gold medal of the 24th Asian Junior Tenpin Bowling Championships by one pin from Squad 1 leader, Walaphut Andrew Wong of Thailand while Wan Muhammad Zarif Mazlan of Malaysia claimed the bronze medal.

Kuwait's Adel Ali started the Boy's Singles Squad 2 with a sizzling 289 to lead team-mate and newly-crowned 48th Hong Kong Open champion, Nasser Alkandari by 20 pins. Qatar's Talal Al Marri shared second spot with a superb 269.

Adel held the lead for another game with 193 as Tan Dat Nguyen added 266 to his 213 opener to take up second spot. Nawaf Al Tamimi of Saudi Arabia trailed in third, 13 pins away. Tan rolled 254 in his third game to take over the running ahead of Nasser in second.

The Kuwaiti took a brief lead when Tan managed 191 in his fourth game but Tan bounced back with 227 to regain the lead. Wan Muhammad Zarif took up second spot while his compatriot, Sayed Abdullah shot the championship's second 300 to tie third spot with Nasser.

The Vietnamese two-hander needed 224 or more in his final game to overhaul Squad 1 leader, Wilaphut for the gold. The 16-year-old displayed great composure to end the squad with 225 and snatched the gold medal with 1376, just one pin ahead of the Wilaphut.

The Thai settled for the silver medal with 1375 while Muhammad Aqil Faizal, who was second to Wilaphut, claimed the bronze medal with 1361. Wan Muhammad Zarif missed the podium by one pin after finishing fourth with 1360, missing by one pin./p>

Nasser and Adel Ali, who were in the running for a podium spot, ended in fifth and sixth positions with 1352 and 1346 respectively. Mr Wu Fu-Lung, President of Chinese Taipei Bowling Association presented the medals to the winners while Mr Salem Al Marzouqi, Host Tournament Co-Ordinator presented the bouquet of flowers.

Competition will shift to the Doubles event tomorrow, July 29 with the Girls and Boys Squad 1 to be contested at 10:00am local time and the Boys Squad 2 at 2:20pm. The medal ceremony will follow after the completion of the Doubles event.
