18th May, Hanoi: Malaysia broke Singapore's dominance in the women's division at the 31st SEA Games Vietnam 2021, to lead the Team of Four first block, a slender 63 pins ahead of Singapore in second and Indonesia in third on Wednesday afternoon.

Doubles bronze medallists, Gillian Lim and Nur Syazwani Sahar of Malaysia teaming up with Nora Lyana Natasia and Nerosha Keligit got off to a better start with 820 in their opening game. Doubles silver medallists of Sharon Limansantoso and Tannya Roumimper with their team-mates, Putty Armein and Shinta Ceysaria of Indonesia did well to take up second with 810.

Doubles gold medallists, New Hui Fen and Cherie Tan along with Daphne Tan and Bernice Lim of Singapore managed a moderate 808 for third while Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam made up the other three spots.

The Malaysian quartet improved on their first game with a stronger 870 in the second, thanks to Natasia's big game of 290 but Singapore fought back with 877 to narrow the gap from 10 to just 5 pins. Indonesia slipped down to third with 827, 42 pins adrift Singapore.

Both Lim and Natasia were clearly carrying the team when they finished with identical good games of 236 but Keligit and Sahar failed to match up with their team-mates, managing 183 and 161 respectively. However, with just 816 in their third game, their lead over arch-rival, Singapore was increased to 63 pins on a 2506 total.

Singapore made no headway managing only 758 but was lucky to remain in second with 2443. Indonesia did not take the chance to overhaul the Singaporeans with 709 in the third game to stay in third, 97 pins adrift.

Thailand outshone Philippines to take up fourth with 2295, Philippines in fifth with 2274 and host nation, Vietnam in sixth position with 2122. The women will resume with their second block of 3 games tomorrow afternoon after the men.
