Malaysian nationals dominates opening squad

17th April, Bangkok: Malaysian national bowlers dominated the first block qualifying rounds opening Squad A of the 50th MWA-Thailand International Open Bowling Championships with Timmy Tan leading the Men's Open division while Sin Li Jane topped the Women's Open division.

Wan Muhd Zarif Ikram of Malaysia got off the block with a sizzling 264 to lead fellow-countrymen, Timmy Tan by seven pins. A third Malaysian and 2024 champion, Rafiq Ismail shared third spot with another Malaysian, Sayed Syawal on 235.

Tan added a moderate 210 to take over the lead as Rafiq downed 218 to move into second. A fourth Malaysian, Hazim Alihanafiah shot a scintillating 269 for third while 2025 Malaysian Open champion, Ethan Damien Goh also rolled a big game of 268 to move into contention.

The leader ended the first block with 222, 214 and 214 to top the squad with 1117. Hazim finished second with 1115, just two pins adrift. Rafiq settled for third position with 1102. Edric Lim Xian Jun of Singapore and Ahmad Muaz of Malaysia rounded out the top five with 1093 and 1083 respectively.


Block 1 Squad A leader, Timmy Tan

Two-time Thailand Open champion, Nora Lyana Nastasia of Malaysia set the pace for the Women's Open division with 235 in her opening game to lead team-mate Nur Syazwani Sahar by just one pin. A third Malaysian, Sin Li Jane was third with 231.

Sin added 217 to quickly take over the running, 11 pins ahead of Nur Syazwani remaining in second. Nora Lyana slipped down to third. Sin remained in the lead after knocking down 222 in her third game. Nora Lyana bounced back with 224 to move up to second.

The leader went on to add 192 and 214 in her last two games to end the first block in the lead with 1076. Nora Lyana kept her second spot with 1070 while a fourth Malaysian, Intan Nor Edryana stormed home to finish third with 1021.

Krizziah Macatula of Philippines and Natasah Roslan of Malaysia completed the top five with 1014 and 1005 respectively. Squad B will take to the lanes for their first block qualifying rounds. Squads D and C will end the first day of qualifying later in the day.
