Asian Bowling Federation

26th June, 2000, Doha: The FIQ WTBA Asian Zone had its name changed to Asian Bowling Federation with immediate effect after the 16th General Assembly approved it's proposal yesterday at Doha Sheraton Hotel, Qatar.

30 countries of the Asian Zone unanimously agreed to change the name after being used for the last 32 years, to avoid the confusion and frequent questions on what is FIQ and that what sport is the organization involved with. The new name appears to all without having to explain.

Mrs. Vivien Fung, the incumbent President since 1996, was re-elected President of the Asian Bowling Federation for the next four years ending 2004. Vivien defeated the challenger - Mr. Abdul Salam Abas of Qatar with 17 votes against 13. Two incumbent Vice President - Mr. Li Jiajun of China and Mr. Sidney Tung of Malaysia also retain their positions for the next four years term. The other two new Vice President elected are Mrs. June Voulokos of Australia and Sheikh Talal Mohammad Al-Sabah of Kuwait.

The General Assembly, apart from the election of the new Executive Board for the next 4 years, also accepted Chinese Taipei's application to host the 18th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championship 2004. The 17th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championship will be held in Hong Kong 2002. UAE will host the 11th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championship 2001 and Hong Kong will host the 12th series in 2003.

The 1st World Ranking Masters Finals, with top eight men and top eight women bowlers each from Asian Zone, America Zone and European Zone ( a total of 24 men and 24 women), will be held in Abu Darbi, UAE February 2001.

19 countries have sent their men and women team to compete in the 16th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championship commencing June 28 at Qatar Bowling Centre here. The Opening Ceremony of the event will be held this evening and the first event - Men's Singles and Women's Singles will be held tomorrow June 28.

World Ranking System

WTBA to introduce world ranking system this year

The World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA) will introduce a new world ranking system this year to keep bowlers on their toes throughout the year.

For a start, though, the rankings will be divided into three zones - Asia, Europe and America.

The top eight women and men from each zone will then compete in the World Ranking Tournament at the end of the year to determine the world number ones, said Mr Sidney Tung, Deputy Secretary General of WTBA.

"Our plan is to have a standard world ranking system for all but because of the different format played in different zones, there is a need for separate ranking first," he added.

"But we are working on habing a universal world rankings system like in other sports."

As for the Asians, the just concluded Malaysian Open was the first tournament to offer ranking points.

"The performances in the Asian Bowling Tour will also be counted. We will release the Asian top eight men and women soon," said Sidney.
