Singapore wins second gold

17th December, Bangkok: Arianne Tay and Singles gold medalist, Charmaine Chang Yu Qian won Singapore's second gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games Bowling Championships with victory over Indonesia's pair of Alisha Nabila Larasati and Putty Armein in the Women's Doubles final.

Larasati and Armein started off better in their first two frames while Tay and Chang had big splits in their second frame to trail the Indonesian pair by 38 pins. Just as the Singapore pair tried to recover, Chang stumbled to another split in her fourth frame to trail even further.

Both title contenders were cautious in their next two frames without making any major mistakes by picking up their spares. Larasati then miss a crucial single spin in the seventh frame as their opponent came back to narrow the gap.

Larasati ended poorly with another split in her final frame to finish with 160. Tay ended higher with 188 leaving their anchorwomen to decide the tie in their last two frames. Chang roll three strikes-in-a-row to end with 191 while Armein was unable to respond and finished with 193.

Singapore sealed the their second gold with a 379-353 victory with Indonesia settling for the silver medal. The champion edged second-seed, Adania Mohd Redzwan and Nur Hazirah Ramli of Malaysia A, 432-428 in the second semi-final match to reach the final.

Larasati and Armein ousted Sharon Limansantoso and Adila Indryati, 388-353 in the first all-Indonesia semi-final match to advance to the final. Limansantoso and Indryati breezed past top-seed, Nur Irdina Binte Hazly and Colleen Pee of Singapore, 425-379 in the earlier first quarter-finals match.

Adania and Nur Hazirah dispatched seventh-seed, Philippines B pair, 417-360 in the second quarter-finals match. Tay and Chang fought out a thrilling third quarter-finals match beating sixth-seed, Natasha Roslan and Sin Li Jane, 467-458 in the third quarter-finals match. Larasati and Armein edged fifth-seed, Philippines A, 373-364 in the fourth quarter-finals match to book their spot in the semi-finals.

Singapore A topped the earlier six-games qualifying round with 2485 ahead of Malaysia A in second with 2451. Singapore B and early pace-setter, Indonesia B finished third and fourth positions with 2431 and 2429 respectively.

Philippines A, Malaysia B, Philippines B and Indonesia A rounded out the top 8 to make the quarter-finals from fifth to eighth positions. Both Thailand pairs missed out after finishing ninth and tenth positions.

Competition will shift to the Team of 4 qualifying round tomorrow, December 18 over two blocks of three games each. The top 4 Men's Team and top 4 Women's Team will advance to the semi-finals to be contested on December 19, the last day of the championships.
