Hong Kong, Kuwait captures Masters gold

29th August, Jakarta: Third-seed, Jovi Ma Ka Yin of Hong Kong A and Sharifa Askander of Kuwait ended the 25th Asian Junior Bowling Championships with victory in the Boy's and Girl's Masters Stepladder final matches for the final two gold medals.

All Events gold medalist and second-seed, Dylan Lam Nok Him had a better start in the Boy's all-Hong Kong semi-final match against third-seed, Jovi Ma Ka Yin. Ma leveled the match with three strikes-in-a-row from the third frame.

Lam had an upper edge over his team-mate after a double in seventh and eighth frames but Ma fought back gallantly by striking out from eighth frame to end the match with 234. All Lam needed was to match Ma but suffered a 8-pin split to hand the tie to Ma with 215.

Ma went on to beat top-seed, Royce Wayne Padua of Philippines, 232-194 in the first of a two-game total pinfall final. Ma was on a roll while the 14-year-old Filipino failed to make any impact, eventually losing the second game, 211-236.

Ma earned a well deserved gold medal with 468-405 total. Padua settled for the silver medal while Lam added a silver medal to Hong Kong A team. In the earlier second block Masters finals, Padua topped the field with 3686 on an 18-game match winning six matches. Lam finished second with 3592 from five wins while Ma made the stepladder finals cut in third with 3489 with six wins.

In the girl's division, top-seed Sharifa Askander of Kuwait defeated third-seed, Nura Salsabila Zulkifli of Singapore, 372-362 for a first-ever gold medal won by a Kuwaiti female bowler. Sharifa edged her challenger, 191-189 in the first game and 181-173 in the second game.

Nura Salsabila out-classed second-seed, Li Yi-Rou of Chinese Taipei, 221-156 to earn a crack at the finals against the Kuwaiti. In the earlier second block Masters finals, Sharifa, who was second to Li before the position-round match, defeated the Taiwanese, 242-203 to snatch top-seed with 3233.

Li settled for second with 3231, just two pins adrift while the Singaporean finished third with 3195 to join the duo in the stepladder finals.

Singapore emerged as the Overall Girls Champion with a medal haul of 2-2-2. Malaysia took second spot with 2-1-0 and Kuwait tallied 1-1-0. Hong Kong A team emerged as the Overall Boys Champion with a medal haul of 2-2-1. Qatar A finished second with 1-1-0 and Vietnam third with 1-0-1. Singapore came away as Overall Champion with a medal haul of 3-2-2.

Mr Michael Seymour, CEO of International Bowling Federation (IBF), presented the overall boys and girls champions award while Mr Agus Muhammad Bahron, President of Persatuan Boling Indonesia (PBI) presented the overall champion award.

Mr Hasrial Arimis, Secretary General of PBI and Organising Chairman handed the ABF flag to Dr Danny Santos, representing ABF, who in turn handed it to Mr Daniel Yiu representing the host of the next Asian Junior Bowling Championships in Macau, China in 2027.
