Singapore, Germany wins Singles gold

18th July, Incheon: Fourth-seed, Arianne Tay of Singapore defeated Stella Lokfors of Finland, 2-0 in the final to win the Girl's Singles gold medal of the 2024 IBF World Youth Championships while Paul Purps of Germany cruised to a comfortable victory over Carl Ekland of Sweden, 2-0 in the Boy's division.

Tay had a comfortable win in the first match, 216-168 to go one up in the best-of-three final match against Stella Lokfors of Finland. The Finn was no match for the Singaporean as she had another easy win, 199-156 in the second match to earn Singapore's first gold.

Lokfors reached the finals after defeating Annalise O'Bryant of USA 2-1 in the semi-finals held on Friday, July 12 after the Matchplay Rounds. The champion beat Yumi Yuzuriha Seragki of Peru, 2-0 in the other semis to advance to the title match.

The Yuzuriha (247) and O'Bryant (216) advanced to the semi-finals in a three-way tie-breaker eliminating Johansson (190) after they amassed 15 points each in the Matchplay Rounds Group A. Lokfors finished top of Group B with 15 points and Tay defeated Kiri Watanabae of Japan, 268-192 in the tie-breaker roll-off.

Germany also won their first gold medal of the championships after Paul Purps defeated defending champion, Carl Eklund of Sweden, 212-189 and 246-201 for a 2-0 victory. The two-hander German lefty had reached the final with another 2-0 win over Ben Pettit of New Zealand in the semi-finals.

Eklund denied Korea their first gold after beating Bae Junghun, 2-1 in the other semi-final match. Bae and Purps advanced to the semi-finals after finishing first and second in the Matchplay Round Group A with 21 16 points respectively.

Pettit qualified for the semoi-finals after topping Group A with 18 points while Eklund beat Daiya Saito of Japan, 236-212 in the one-game tie-breaker roll-off when both amassed 15 points a piece.

Next up in will be the Mixed Team finals between Korea and Sweden, which will be another chance for the host nation, Korea can win a their first gold medal.
