Macau nationals shine in qualifying

26th June, Macau: Defending champion, Lei Hok Hin of Macao-China National team, topped the local pool of the Men's Open qualifying rounds of the 2025 Macao-China International Open while triple Asian Junior gold medalist, Wong Son Ian led the Women's Open local pool.

2019 Macao-China Open first runner-up, Lee Tak Man had led the local pool with 1345 but was over-taken by Lei after he improved his lower 3-game series to 680 for a new aggregate of 1349, four pins ahead of Lee. Lam Iek Long remained in third with 1316.

The top 3 in the local pool will earn a bye, skipping Round 1 finals and automatically advance to Round 2. Chau Lei Man, Tang Shing Hei and Choi Hou In made up the six local qualifiers. The three National bowlers seeded qualifiers were newly-crown Macao Cup champion, Zoe Dias Ma, Chan Tak Seng and Ho Chi Chong.

There were no changes in the top 3 positions of the overseas pool with two Japanese, Yuki Murahama and Tomoyuki Sasaki taking up the first two spots with 1417 and 1408. Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong is sitting in third spot with 1377. Jung Woo Yun of KNSU, Korea missed the top 3 to finish fourth with 1361.

Stanley Lau of Hong Kong headed the mixed pool with 1303 while the cut in ninth position went to Josh Goh of Singapore with 1268. Last year's cut was 1340 and with just four remaining qualifying squads left, the cut could be around 1300.

In the Women's Open division, triple Asian Junior Championships gold medalist, Wong Son Ian topped the local pool with 1292 followed by compatriot, So Cheng Lam and Veronica De Souza in second and third with 1199 and 1177 respectively.

The top 3 in the local pool will also earn a bye, skipping Round 1 finals and automatically advance to Round 2. Zheng Mei Leng missed the top bracket by 19 pins with 1158 to take up fourth. Gloria Chiu and Cheng Chi Cheng made up the top 6 local qualifiers.

Korean women from KNSU dominated the overseas pool with Hong Yun Seo, Kim Bo Ah and Kim Na Yean occupying the top 3 spots with 1324, 1307 and 1271 respectively. Two additional KNSU women, Paek Ye Dam and Park Si Eun finished fourth and fifth.

Amlynn Sim and Anya Min Das of Agape Bowling Academy, Singapore made up the top 7 overseas qualifiers. Ex-international, Gigi Leung of Hong Kong headed the mixed pool with 1193 while the cut in ninth position went to Jayee Wong of Singapore with 1147.

Qualifying will end late tonight with the last squad at 9.00pm local time. A one-game Desperado squad will be staged to include three Men's Open with the highest score to qualify for Round 1 finals.

The Youth Masters finals will be held on June 28 morning and the Men's and Women's Open Round 1 finals in the afternoon. The top 12 finishers in the Men's Open and Women's Open Round 1 finals will advance to Saturday's Round 2 Finals. The top 4 with the highest pinfalls at the end of Round 2 will proceed to the Stepladder Shootout Finals.
