Hong Kong, Korea dominates Round 1 finals

26th June, Macau: 2023 champion, James Lui Chin Hung led a Hong Kong domination of the Men's Open Round 1 Masters finals of the 2026 Macao China International Open Bowling Championships followed by Michael Mak and Amen Yuen while Lee Da Eun and Kim Seung Jun of KNSU/Korea took first and third spots in the Women's division.

Amen Yuen got of the 8-game block brilliantly with a sizzling 288 in his opening game followed by his team-mate, Jeremy Wong in second, 10 pins adrift while James Lui was third, a further two pins away. Yuen added 252 in the second game to maintain his lead.

Michael Mak, who recently returned to the Hong Kong national team after an absence of over one year, shot 254 and 267 to move up into second spot. Lui stayed with the leading duo in third with another strong game of 227.

Mak took over the lead after the third game following his 300 and held the lead for another game with 257. Yuen trailed in second but bounced back with a scintillating 289 to regain the lead from Mak. But Mak responded with back-to-back 245 in the sixth and seventh games to move back into the lead.

Lui stormed home with 276 and 267 in his last two games to snatch top spot with 2047. Mak settled for second with 2042, just five pins away. Pace-setter, Yuen made an all-Hong Kong top 3 finishers with 2026.

Desperado squad qualifier, Ethan Leung made the cut in 12th position with 1957 while Chen Te-Shuan of Chinese Taipei missed the cut by eight pins finishing 13th. The top 12 from this round advanced to Round 2 finals joined by the six seeded qualifiers for another 8 games.

Women from Korean National Sport University nearly swept all the top 3 positions in the Women's Open Round 1 finals. Kim Na Yeon set the early pace with 277 and 213 to lead a field of 18 finalists. Her team-mate, Kim Seung Jun trailed in second but eventually took over the running after the third game.

Seung Jun led for the next three games before a third KNSU bowler, Le Da Eun shot into the lead after the seventh game. Lee ended with a strong 277 to seal top spot with 1932. Sueng Jun was edged off second by the strong finish of Charmaine Chang of Singapore.

Chang rolled 289 and back-to-back 267 to split the two Koreans by taking up second position with 1876. Seung Jun settled for third position with 1844. Shannen Ong of Singapore and a fourth Korean, Park Si Eun rounded out the top five with 1835 and 1824 respectively.

Ha Yeon Woo made the cut for Round 2 finals in ninth position with 1766. Early pace-setter, Kim Na Yeon disappointingly missed the cut by just four pins, finishing in tenth.

The top 9 along with the six seeded qualifiers will bowl another 8 games in Round 2 finals tomorrow commencing at 9:00am. The top 6 men and top 6 women with the highest pinfalls will proceed to the Stepladder Shootout finals.
